Plant name: Matricaria chamomilla L.
Active constituents: chamazulene, acetylene apigenin, quercetin, and patuletin
Medicinal Properties:
- Reduce inflammation by fighting free radical damage and preventing cell mutation
- Chamomile is especially helpful in dispelling gas, soothing the stomach, and relaxing the muscles that move food through the intestines.
- Studies in preclinical models suggest that chamomile inhibits Helicobacter pylori. Chamomile is believed to be helpful in reducing smooth muscle spasms associated with various gastrointestinal inflammatory disorders.
- Sedative effects may be due to the flavonoid, apigenin that binds to benzodiazepine receptors in the brain
