Chamomile

CHAMOMILE

Plant name: Matricaria chamomilla L.  

Active constituents:  chamazulene, acetylene apigenin, quercetin, and patuletin 

Medicinal Properties:  

  • Reduce inflammation by fighting free radical damage and preventing cell  mutation 
  • Chamomile is especially helpful in dispelling gas, soothing the stomach, and relaxing the muscles that move food through the intestines. 
  • Studies in preclinical models suggest that chamomile inhibits Helicobacter pylori. Chamomile is believed to be helpful in reducing smooth muscle spasms associated with various gastrointestinal inflammatory disorders. 
  • Sedative effects may be due to the flavonoid, apigenin that binds to benzodiazepine receptors in the brain
